چکیده

the fast-moving variants, and the homozygotes as shown in Figure 1. (Recently I have also detected a case of heterozygosity of transferrin and complement component C3). However, it is always necessary to keep in mind that a1-antitrypsin heterozygosity is not the only cause of a1 zone-splitting. In fact, in one case the additional band was a-fetoprotein (1). In my experience the better way to ascertain the cause of the splitting is the immunosubtraction electrophoresis technique (2), which in this case consists of the immunoprecipitation of a1-antitrypsin at the beginning of the electrophoretic run. In the caseof a1-antitrypsin heterozygosity the two ai bands will disappear. By the immunofixation technique the results are not so good because the close proximity of the two bands almost always causes the immunoprecipitates to fuse.

Clinical accuracy of continuous hemoglobin oxygen saturation monitoring devices.

Three devices used to measure hemoglobin oxygen saturation in the extracorporeal circuit were studied and compared to a control. The Baxter Bentley OxySat, Oximetrix Accusat, and Radiometer ABL4 blood gas monitor were compared to a control, the IL 282 Co-Oximeter. Fifty-one sample points were obtained during all phases of cardiopulmonary bypass with results as follows: table: see text. The Ac...

Accuracy of a continuous noninvasive hemoglobin monitor in intensive care unit patients.

OBJECTIVE To determine whether noninvasive hemoglobin measurement by Pulse CO-Oximetry could provide clinically acceptable absolute and trend accuracy in critically ill patients, compared to other invasive methods of hemoglobin assessment available at bedside and the gold standard, the laboratory analyzer. DESIGN Prospective study. SETTING Surgical intensive care unit of a university teachi...

The efficacy of noninvasive hemoglobin measurement by pulse CO-oximetry in neonates.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate clinical applicability of noninvasive hemoglobin (Hb) measurement with a pulse CO-oximeter in neonates. DESIGN Prospective comparison study. SETTING Neonatal ICU. PATIENTS Fifty-six preterm and term infants with median age = 20 days (range = 1-98 days) and median weight = 1,440 g (range = 530-4,230 g). INTERVENTIONS Hb measurements by Pulse CO-Oximetry (Masimo Radi...

Porcine-specific hemoglobin saturation measurements.

The determination of O(2) consumption by using arteriovenous O(2) content differences is dependent on accurate oxyhemoglobin saturation measurements. Because swine are a common experimental species, we describe the validation of CO-oximeter for porcine-specific oxyhemoglobin saturation. After developing a nonlinear mathematical model of the porcine oxyhemoglobin saturation curve, we made 366 po...

Late diagnosis of congenital methemoglobinemia in an elderly patient during cardiac surgery.

METHEMOGLOBIN (metHb), resulting from the oxidation of iron in hemoglobin from the ferrous state to ferric state, cannot bind oxygen and thereby leads to a displacement of the hemoglobin dissociation curve to the left. It can, therefore, impair tissue oxygen delivery. Methemoglobinemia, which is characterized by the presence of a higher-than-normal level of metHb, either can be congenital (due ...
